Hand Technique
Seiken
Normal Fist
PronunciationSay-ken
Key Points
- Purpose
- The strongest and most effective fist position for attack and defense. Used for Jodan-tsuki (upper body thrust), Chudan-tsuki (middle body thrust), and Gedan-tsuki (lower body thrust)
- Timing
- Primary technique for practice-sparring and powerful strikes
Step-by-Step Execution
Follow these steps to perform the Seiken correctly
Starting with the little finger, bend all four fingers so their tips are digging tightly into the palm as close to their bases as possible
Photo 1: Fingers curled tightly into palm. This is the foundation of proper fist formation
Bend the thumb over the second joints of the first two fingers (index and middle) to further tighten the fist
Photo 2: Thumb locked over knuckles. This secures the fist structure and prevents injury
Hold the fist with palm facing up, touching your side on a level with your chest. The arm and back of hand should be in a straight line
Photo 3: Ready position with fist at hip. This is the correct starting position for Seiken thrust
Thrust forward while turning the fist inward so at the point of attack the palm faces down
Strike with the knuckles of the first two fingers. Keep arm and back of hand rigidly in a straight line
Practice Complete
Repeat the sequence to build muscle memory
