Taikyoku

3 kata

The starting point. One stance, one block and one punch, repeated along a simple I-shaped floor pattern until stepping and turning stop needing thought.

Pinan

5 kata

Five forms of the peaceful mind. Each adds a stance, a level of attack or a change of direction, carrying a student from blue belt through to green.

Gekisai

2 kata

Attack and destroy. Brown-belt forms that tie hard technique to deliberate, audible breathing and full commitment of the hips.

Advanced

4 kata

Breath, internal power and close-range application — the forms studied once the basics no longer need thinking about.

Master the Kata

Kata are prearranged forms that teach fundamental techniques, movement patterns, and the spiritual essence of Kyokushin Karate. Each kata has a specific purpose and contains valuable lessons for practitioners.
